Ganesh Chaturthi festival, marking the birth of elephant-headed Hindu god Ganesh. Ganesh idols are worshipped for 10 days and on the 11th, Ganesh idols are taken through the streets in processions accompanied with dancing, singing and fanfare to be immersed in nearby water body like pond, lake, river or sea, symbolising a ritual see-off of the god.

Environmental pollution caused by Ganesh Chaturthi festival: Chemistry students were into a rude shock after conducting an experiment to check the quantity of lead in a Ganesha idol. The chemical paints used on these idols, themselves contain heavy metals like mercury and cadmium. This increases the level of acidity in the water and the content of heavy metals. Chemistry Professor from Bangalore, said lead is a toxic chemical causing serious health problems. Among children, it affects the central nervous system leading to dip in IQ level. Among elders it causes anaemia, respiratory diseases and infertility.

After death, majority of Hindus are not buried, but cremated. Lot of rituals are associated with the cremation ceremony. When a person dies, the body is given a final bath, carried on a wooden stretcher by his kith and kin with the chanting of the name of Rama and cremated on the community cremation grounds generally by the eldest son.
